Landing Party

Arriving back at Sheridan Landing after a gorgeous run on October 7, it was a surprise to find another car at the rarely used launch. In mid-sentence of mid-chat, the driver suddenly stopped talking as he stared at a another surprise – a very young and very skinny kitten who had wandered out of the woods.

Here he is in the back of Sue’s truck before heading home.

Fish and Guests

Purposely running into a log to shoot a lily pad, led to the discovery of a spider who was not at all welcoming to inedible visitors.

Muskegon Blue Moon

From Muskegon Lake, near the mouth of the north branch of the river. As this was August 1, this beauty’s designation as “blue” had expired several hours previously. But given the pretty morning, who cares?

Too Thin To Plow

Muskegon River, June 9, 2015

The temperature finally got slightly above stupid this morning. Enough so to head out for the first Muskegon River run of the year.

These are both from a foggy run up the north branch after putting in at Fisherman’s Landing. The fog was so thick that it didn’t burn off until way later in the morning.

What was intended to be a short run to check for leaks and other equipment issues went way longer which explains the arms that feel like overcooked spaghetti!

Blazing Banks

These are from what will probably be the last paddle of the year.

The clear fall sky and early morning fog make these look as if there is a fire on the river bank.

Foggy Delta

The oncoming cold made for a very foggy morning on the Muskegon River last Sunday.

Missed Connection

The long weekend offered lots of time for Muskegon River exploration. The first two days of which went very well.

Muskegon River, September 2, 2014

On the third, an attempt to verify an unlikely mapped connection between the branches went south both literally and figuratively. A long haul down a very narrow passage stopped abruptly at a wall of growth so thick that it felt like hitting a wall. The long paddle back to the north branch could only begin after turning around in a deep channel no wider than the boat itself.

Another relaxing holiday.

September Storm

In spite of the foreboding look over the river this morning, today’s storm soaked Grand Rapids much more than Muskegon.

Mosquito Creek

The aptly named Mosquito Creek is a small offshoot of the Muskegon River just east of the North/South branch. Besides the eponymous bugs, there are loads of others as well as gorgeous flowers.

Good Plan. Crappy Execution.

The plan for the morning paddle was to cross the Muskegon River delta on one of the small connectors from the South Branch to the North – and then head up to the major branch of the two. What could be easier?

The first half came off without a hitch. Then, a wrong turn led to a bewildering trudge upriver. Heading up the North branch would have been a fairly easy paddle, but the greatly reduced width of the new route greatly increased the force of the current. Finally the small connector – right back through the delta – emerged only slightly above where the whole trip started.

Spring Creek, July 4, 2014

About four miles up from the boat launch at the end of Sheridan Road (Sheridan Landing? Anyone know?), there is a small offshoot of the river called Spring Creek. Wow. Is it ever beautiful. So much so, that a paddle with an earlier departure is in the works to shoot some sunrise pictures there.
