Amelia Earhart’s Last Flight

Listen to Amelia Earhart.

“Please know I am quite aware of the hazards…I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.”

– Amelia Earhart

Old microphone

A great tune learned from Luther “Dinty” Moore when we played together in the still infamous string band, Reverend Guido and the Geeks.

According to its composer, Red River Dave McEnery, “it was written around a campfire in New York state in 1937, shortly after we received word of Miss Earhart’s disappearance.” This could explain the lyrical hedging as to her eventual return.

If you’re interested in more historic information about that “sad day”, you’d do well to check out the excellent ellenspace

If you would like to learn this great old tune, please let me know and I will put together a tab. In the meantime here are the lyrics.

Amelia Earhart’s Last Flight

by Red River Dave McEnery

A ship out on the ocean sees a speck against the sky.
Amelia Earhart flying that sad day,
with her partner, Captain Noonan on the 2nd of July.
She went across the ocean far away.

She radioed position to say that all was well,
although the fuel inside her tank was low.
She’d stop on Howland island and refuel her monoplane,
then on her trip around the world she’d go.

It’s a beautiful, beautiful field
far away in a land that is fair.
Happy landings to you, Amelia Earhart.
Farewell, first lady of the air.

Just half an hour later, the SOS was heard,
the signal faint, yet still the voice was brave.
In the shark-infested waters, the small plane disappeared.
Amelia went down to her watery grave.

So, now you’ve heard the story of this awful tragedy.
We pray that she’ll fly safely home again.
In years to come as others blaze their trail across the sky,
we’ll ne’re forget Amelia and her plane.

Sudden Stop

Today’s surprisingly warm morning inspired a run up the south branch of the Muskegon River.

The return trip wasn’t quite so idyllic. An unexplored crossover to the north branch included fast water around blind corners into an old stand of trees. At least those were passable. The next run ended abruptly at a chest high log completely blocking the river. Way too much excitement for the early hour.

One Shortcut Too Many

Just east of this Muskegon River bridge, is a small offshoot that appeared to be a possible connection between the south and north branches. After marshaling the nerve to try it, the breakout turned into a really fun run that did connect, taking several miles off last week’s route.

It didn’t take long to spend those saved miles.

Heading west down the south branch, another seeming shortcut between the two branches was irresistible – and a complete dead end, an excellent remedy to unwarranted overconfidence in navigational prowess.

Check out the “one step forward, two steps back” procedure in this map of the trip.

Busted Boat

You’ve logged a lot of paddling hours when your plastic boat springs a leak.

A long run on the Muskegon River yesterday seemed way longer when the old Perception started taking on water. Ten or twelve years of rocky rivers finally opened up a hole in the keel just below the rudder. Pulling her out to dump the additional ballast became increasingly tough, but not as tough as paddling with the rear storage loaded with 40 -50 pounds of H2O.

Assuming that the warranty may have expired – during Bush’s first administration – the saw horses came out for a Saturday afternoon of TLC. Besides the hull patch, the old girl got a new rudder cable and a seat repair.

Branching Out

Saturday’s paddle was up the South Branch of the Muskegon River to the North Branch and then back down river to the lake.

The differences between the two branches were really surprising. The run east had loads of shallow sections, no houses, no people. After turning back west, there are great little fishing cabins along a seemingly deeper river. That is, you’d never guess that the two are part of the same system – and only a short distance from each other geographically.

Here’s the entire run…
